You reach your lodge for your next 2 nights in time for lunch. After lunch, have some time to rest and set out for an afternoon game drive.

Highly underrated, yet bursting with a dense wildlife population, it won’t take you long to appreciate just why we love Tarangire. It’s a special park – virtually unspoiled, with far fewer visitors than the world-renowned Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The park is home to the largest elephant population of any park in the northern circuit and over 550 bird species!

Thousands of Elephants, Buffalos, Giraffes, Zebras, Wildebeests, and Antelopes, congregate at the Tarangire River for water during the dry season; from June to September. Elephants are often present in huge herds of up to 300 animals. Lions, leopards, Hyenas, cheetahs, and other predators follow the herds.

You have a full day to explore Tarangire.

You will enjoy morning and afternoon game drives, returning to the lodge for lunch and a short rest in the heat of the day, when animals are less active. Tarangire is one of our favourite parks in Tanzania, partly because it is quieter than the other parks, but also because of its incredible natural beauty.

It really is an awe-inspiring place, comprising of golden savannah plains, punctuated with open woodlands, vast swamps, rocky ridges, dense riverine forests (ideal coverage for leopards), and a high density of Africa’s most iconic tree, the baobab. The park is also one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelopes such as Beisa Oryx and Gerenuk are regularly seen.

The park also has amazing birdlife, including the dazzling Yellow-collared lovebirds, the Common Ostrich (the world’s biggest bird), and Kori Bustard (the heaviest flying bird in the world). You will again return to the lodge for your final dinner and overnight here. Tomorrow you’re off to the fabled Serengeti!

Day 5: Transfer to Serengeti National Park for Game Drives.

Today you have a long but rewarding journey into the world-famous Serengeti National Park. The scenery and views are spectacular as you drive through the farming region of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Pass through several Maasai Villages before entering the ‘Endless Plains’ of Serengeti National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The park covers over 14,000km2 and is unequaled for its natural beauty. It contains over 3 million large mammals, including Buffalo, Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Cheetah, Hyena, Giraffe, and Painted wolves. There is also a profusion of birdlife with over 530 species, including Bustards, Cranes, Vultures, Eagles, Owls, Herons, Storks, Ostriches, and the bizarre, long-legged Secretary birds.

The Serengeti is, however, world-renowned for the annual Great Migration of over 2 million Wildebeest, Zebras, and Gazelles. It is the largest overland animal migration on earth and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

This afternoon, enjoy a bush picnic lunch and a game drives up to your overnight camp or lodge in Central Serengeti. This area of the park encompasses the fabulous Seronera Valley, known for its prime big game and other wildlife.

Day 6: Full Day Game Drives In Serengeti National Park

Your day 6 of the 10 days Tanzania safari tour will begin with an early breakfast at the lodge. Then, set off on a morning game drive in Central Serengeti’s Seronera region. You’ll return to your camp for lunch. After lunch, have some time to relax and then you go out in search of more animals and birds on an afternoon game drive.

Central Serengeti’s Seronera region is set directly on the Great Migration path and offers excellent viewing of this incredible annual wildlife phenomenon when countless wildebeests flood across the plains. While migratory game populations fluctuate seasonally, Seronera is still a wildlife hotspot at other times of the year, sheltering the ‘big five, among many other species.

Lions, cheetahs, and hyenas are common here, and leopards are often seen in the valley. Many smaller animals like Bat-Eared Foxes, Mongoose, Honey Badger, Jackals, Caracals, Monkeys, Baboons, and African hares also inhabit this area.

You will return to your lodge to freshen up and enjoy dinner. You will then retire for a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow you have a fantastic day in Serengeti.

Day 7: Full-Day Game Drives In Serengeti National Park

You have another full day to explore Serengeti. You’ll enjoy morning and afternoon game drives and return to the camp for lunch and a short siesta in the heat of the day.

Serengeti gets its name from the local Maasai word ‘Siringet’, meaning the “place where the land runs forever”. Its great stretches of savannahs are dotted with unique umbrella-shaped acacia trees. Many people claim that the sunsets in Serengeti are the most spectacular on earth, with rusty orange shades covering the plains and wildlife as the sun hides behind silhouettes of acacia trees and lone giraffes.

You will once again return to the camp after your game drive to relax and have dinner. Afterward, you will retire to your bed for a good night’s rest, listening to the magical African bush sounds as you drift off peacefully. Tomorrow, the final part of this wonderful 10 days Tanzania safari tour begins.

Day 8: Transfer to Ngorongoro Crater via Olduvai Gorge

After a good breakfast today, it’s time to drive eastwards to visit another spectacular setting for Tanzania’s wildlife, the famous Ngorongoro Crater.

Along the way, you stop at the Olduvai Gorge, the ‘cradle of humankind. It’s here at this important prehistoric site, where, in 1959, anthropologists Dr and Mrs Leakey discovered a hominid (human-like) skull dating back 1.8 million years. Visit Olduvai Gorge Museum to learn more about this amazing place and its secrets. After the Gorge visit, continues to your overnight lodge near the Ngorongoro Crater rim.

On arrival, you settle in at the lodge while a tasty, hot dinner is prepared for you. Ngorongoro is the world’s largest inactive, unfilled, intact volcanic caldera (260km2 wide and 2000ft deep), formed about 2 million years ago when a giant volcano almost the size of Mount Kilimanjaro explored and collapsed on itself. Its stunning scenery and abundant wildlife merge to make it a wonder of the natural world.

Ngorongoro Crater has one of Africa’s densest concentrations of wildlife. Over 30,000 animals reside in the crater, including over 7,000 Wildebeest, 4,000 Zebras, 3,000 Elands, and 3,000 Gazelles. These enormous herds attract a large number of predators, like Hyenas, Cheetah, Leopards, and Lions. Ngorongoro also hosts some 500 bird species, including Ostriches, Secretary birds, Flamingos, Kori bustards, Egyptian vultures, Fan-tailed widow birds, Jackson’s widow birds, Hildebrandt’s starlings, Livingstone’s Turaco, Rosy-throated Longclaw, Rufous-tailed weaver, Golden-winged sunbirds, and Verreaux’s eagles.
