Day 1: Transfer from Arusha to Serengeti National Park via Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Your fantastic 4 days Tanzania safari begins at 6.30 am.

Your tour driver guide shall pick you up from your hotel in Arusha and take you on a long but beautiful drive of about 8 hours north. You will travel through several Masai Villages as well as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

You will have a stop for a picnic lunch and gaze down into the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater. You will be coming back to fully explore the Ngorongoro Crater, but first, you have one of the greatest wildlife-watching destinations on earth before you: the Serengeti National Park.

At 14,763km2 (5700 miles2) the Serengeti is an epic place and is home to a wonderful array of wildlife. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the park is renowned for the Great Migration – the Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth. Nearly 2 million animals (Wildebeest, Zebra, and Gazelles) migrate between the Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara, constantly driven by their search for fresh grazing.

These enormous herds are closely followed by large predators – Lion, Leopard, Hyena, and Cheetah, easily visible in the endless rolling Serengeti plains.

Even when it’s off-season for the migration, Serengeti delivers superb game viewing throughout the year. Simply put, it is the finest game viewing in the world, and that includes some 530 recorded bird species in the Serengeti. Today, enjoy a late afternoon game drive up to your overnight lodge/camp in Central Serengeti.

Please Note: It is also possible to take a scenic flight of about 1½ hours from Arusha Airport to Seronera Airstrip in Serengeti, where your guide meets you for a memorable game drive to your accommodation in Central Serengeti. In this case, you can enjoy a long afternoon game drive in the park.

A host to Africa’s largest predator population, this reserve is renowned for its lion population of over 3000 individuals.

After a relaxed breakfast today, enjoy another game drive in wonderful Serengeti.

Explore the Moru Kopjes, an area of smooth granite boulders and trees that is home to the remaining population of black rhinos in the Serengeti. The area offers a chance to glimpse all of the Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and buffalo).

And during May-June (northward migration) and November-December (southward migration), Moru Kopjes offers phenomenal game viewing as it lies directly on the main wildebeest and zebra migration route.

May is the time of the wildebeest rut (mate). Male wildebeest madly dash about rounding up females and chasing off other males. Male bulls establish frequent mobile territories and each one attempts to retain as many passing cows as possible. The noise and commotion of over ½ million bulls grunting and clashing horns can be overwhelming. After the game drive, return to your camp for lunch.

After lunch, check out and start your 3-4 hour back to the Ngorongoro Crater, which is considered the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ and home to the densest concentration of big mammals in Africa. It’s also one of the best Big 5 reserves in East Africa. You’ll have your overnight at a lodge near the crater rim.

This world’s largest intact and unfolded caldera has formed its unique ecosystem some 3 million years ago when a giant volcano (believed to be as tall as Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest mountain – exploded and collapsed on itself.

Sinking to a depth of 2,000 feet, the base covers about 260km2 (100 miles2) and is home to about 25,000 large animals, including great-tusked elephants, robust black rhinos, black-maned lions, and white-bearded wildebeest.

From the backseat of a 4×4, look for any wildlife you might have missed in the Serengeti or want to see more of.  After 6 hours of adventuring and a delicious picnic lunch on the crater floor, you ascend the crater and embark on a 4-hour drive back to Arusha.
