You’ll reach your camp/lodge for the next 3 nights in time for lunch. After lunch, have some time to relax and then go on a game drive.

Tarangire National Park (2850km2) is a place of giant baobabs, fever tree forests, shimmering swamps, and sweeping vistas, where Tanzania’s largest elephant herds roam. The park is less well known than the Serengeti and feels more ‘raw’ and remote. There is much less traffic.

Its concentrations of big game, however, are not far behind that of the Serengeti, with a big population of Elephants, Buffalos, Wildebeests, Zebras, Giraffes, and Antelopes that congregate around the Tarangire River, especially in the dry season.

Elephants congregate in herds of up to 300 animals, and the large numbers of game animals attract numerous predator species, particularly lions. After a game drive, return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

Tarangire is really a beautiful place, featuring river valleys and vast swamps. These swamps soak up the rain like sponges and maintain a tinge of green, even during the dry season. Away from the swamps, the landscape is dotted with granitic ridges, red-earth termite mounds, sparse whistling thorns, and woodlands.

Throughout, bulbous baobabs impose themselves upon the backdrop, dwarfing even the enormous herds of elephants that forage around them. Tarangire is also the one place in Tanzania where rare dry-country antelope; Oryx and Gerenuk can be seen. You’ll also look for Dwarf Mongoose, leopards, Cheetahs, and African Wild Dogs. You’ll return to your lodge in the early evening, have another delightful dinner and enjoy being out in the African bush.

Leaving Ngorongoro, pass beautiful Maasai villages and descend into the legendary plains of Serengeti – a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site.

Serengeti is rightfully known as a “place where the land runs forever”. Its rolling, golden plains that continue beyond the horizon, and its massive herds of wildebeest, elephant, buffalo, and antelope, fierce predators, and flocks of swooping birds make it one of the most exciting wildlife areas in the world.

Serengeti is also Tanzania’s oldest game park, renowned for the annual Great Wildebeest Migration, an iconic and dramatic scene in wildlife documentaries for decades, and a true bucket list experience. This afternoon, enjoy a picnic lunch and a game drives up to your lodge/camp in Central Serengeti.

Central Serengeti encompasses the world-famous Seronera Valley which is known for its prime big game and other wildlife. In this part of the Serengeti, you are almost guaranteed several sightings of all four large predators (lion, hyena, leopard, and cheetah)! Its picture-perfect landscape is characterized by endless stretches of rolling savannah plains, interspersed by rocky outcrops of granite, scattered with acacia woodlands, and covered in a network of rivers and streams.

This part of the Serengeti also forms part of “the Great Migration” and provides an ideal habitat for a variety of other African mega-fauna wildlife such as Giraffe, Impala, Waterbuck, Hippos, African Elephant, and African Buffalo. You will return to your lodge to freshen up and enjoy dinner.

Day 8: Whole Day Game Drives In Serengeti National Park

On day eight of your 14 days Tanzania safari and Zanzibar tour, you have another full day to enjoy more of what Serengeti has to offer. After breakfast, you go on a morning game drive after which you return for a few hours of relaxation and lunch. In the afternoon you go out again for a game drive.

One of the reasons you’ll fall in love with Serengeti is that this is still “old” Africa. Its weather patterns, fauna, and flora are believed to have changed very little for as long as a million years, giving the area an incredible prehistoric presence. It’s without doubt one of the most spectacular wilderness on the African continent.

Serengeti also hosts over 500 bird species, including rare Fischer’s Lovebird, Secretary bird, Grey-crested Helmetshrike, Red-fronted Parrot, Southern Ground Hornbill, Verreaux’s Eagle, Martial Eagle, and Rüppell’s Vulture. Reptiles in Serengeti include the massive Nile crocodile, Leopard Tortoise, East African Serrated Mud Turtle, Flat-headed Agama, and Nile Monitor.

You’ll again return to camp/lodge after your game drive to relax and have dinner. Afterward, you’ll retire to your bed for a good night’s rest, listening to the magical African bush sounds as you drift peacefully.

Day 9: Travel to Ngorongoro Conservation Area via Olduvai Gorge.

Start your day with a relaxed breakfast at the lodge/camp today.

You then check out and say your goodbyes to the wonderful staff at your camp. You then jump into our vehicle and drive the Serengeti as you head east towards the Ngorongoro Crater – another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Along the way, you stop at Olduvai Gorge – one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world. This is where Drs. Louis and Mary Leaky excavated remains of the earliest humans (hominin fossils), dating back almost 2 million years, leading the area to be known as the “Cradle of Mankind”. These fossils have proven invaluable in furthering our evolution as a species.

After the Gorge tour, continue to your lodge near the Ngorongoro Crater rim for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

Ngorongoro Crater was formed about 2 to 3 million years ago when a giant volcano roughly the size of Mount Kilimanjaro exploded dramatically and collapsed in on itself. Millennia later, its caldera’s ancient walls in what is now the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are still intact, encircling and cradling one of the most biodiverse and precious wild spaces in Africa.

The caldera is home to one of the greatest densities of big game in Africa – some 25000 large animals in little more than 260 km² (100 mile²). It is not unusual to see all African Big 5 animals (Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant, and Buffalo) in a single day and there are other surprises too: Cheetahs, Jackals, snorting hippos, roving spotted hyenas, and large herds of zebra and wildebeest.

It is also an excellent spot for birders, with large flocks of flamingos and other water birds usually resident or passing through, as well as a significant number of raptors.
