Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), our representative will greet you and take you on a short drive to your accommodation in your comfortable hotel in Arusha.

Arusha is a small, cool, lush green town surrounded by coffee plantations. The town is situated at the foot of the 4,566m high Mt Meru volcano – Africa’s fifth highest mountain and close to the snow-capped Mt Kilimanjaro (5895m) – Africa’s highest mountain. It serves as the gateway to the classic northern Tanzania safari circuit.

On this day one of your 9 days Tanzania safari, there are no other planned activities, so you are free to arrive in Tanzania at any time. If you arrive early today you may wish to tour Arusha town. You can head to the Natural History Museum, hit Maasai Market Curio and Craft for souvenirs, and immerse in the local coffee culture at a café. After lunch, have some time to relax, before embarking on an afternoon game drive. Your game drive will reveal all the wonders of Tarangire, a lovely quiet park that is home to Tanzania’s largest herds of elephants and a high density of Africa’s most iconic tree, the baobab. The park is named after the life-giving Tarangire River.

During the dry season (June to October), the river provides the only permanent water for wildlife in the area, attracting thousands of thirsty elephants, Wildebeests, Zebra, Giraffes, Buffalo, and Antelopes. Elephants congregate in herds of up to 300 animals! This concentration of prey attracts various predators including Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Hyenas, and African wild dogs.

Tarangire NP offers visitors the quietest game viewing environment of all the parks in northern Tanzania. It is a very beautiful area comprising grassy savannah plains, open woodlands, vast swamps, rocky ridges, dense riverine forests, and red-earth termite mounds (ideal coverage for families of Dwarf Mongoose).

The park is also the only place in northern Tanzania where you may see the dry-country antelopes like Fringe-eared Oryx and the long-necked Gerenuk.

If you are into bird watching, you are in for a real treat. This park is home to more than 550 species of birds including the dazzling Yellow-collared lovebirds, the Common Ostrich (the world’s biggest bird), and Kori Bustard (the heaviest flying bird in the world). The scenery and views are remarkable as you drive along the Ngorongoro Crater and through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Watch as traditional Maasai villages pass you by and witness young shepherds tend to their precious cattle before entering Serengeti. In the Maasai language, the name Serengeti means “endless plains,” and this legendary protected area of 1.4 million hectares delivers on that promise.

The park is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve that supports the largest concentration of plains game in the world. It is famous for its Big Cats (Lion, Leopard, and Cheetah) and Great Migration – the biggest terrestrial mammal migration on the planet and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

This afternoon, enjoy a bush picnic lunch and a leisurely game drives up to your overnight camp or lodge in Central Serengeti. This area of the park encompasses the fabulous Seronera Valley, known for its prime big game.

Many smaller animals like Bat-eared Foxes, Mongoose, Honey badger, hyraxes, Jackals, Serval, Caracals, genet, civet, monkeys, and African hares also inhabit this area. The network of river valleys in the central Serengeti ensures a year-round water supply that supports a rich wildlife population with plenty of resident game. Another bonus is that Seronera lies on the route of the Great Migration and provides superb viewing of this incredible annual phenomenon between May and June when millions of wildebeests, Gazelles, Zebras, and elands, flood across the plains

There is a profusion of birdlife as well, with over 500 species like bustards, cranes, eagles, herons, owls, storks, vultures, and the bizarre, long-legged secretary birds. You will pass several Masai homesteads before arriving at Olduvai Gorge, the Cradle of Humankind, where, in 1959, anthropologists Dr and Mrs Leakey discovered a hominid (human-like) skull dating back 1.8 million years, fueling the theory that we all come from Africa.

You will enjoy a packed lunch in the courtyard of the Olduvai Gorge visitor center, before walking around the interactive, timeline museum to learn more about this fascinating place. A local guide will then talk you through the ages of the gorge whilst you look out over the valley below.

After the Gorge, continue to your lodge near the Ngorongoro Crater rim for relaxation. You will be mesmerized by the outstanding views of the Crater.
