5 Days Kilimanjaro Hiking Tour – DETAILED SAFARI ITINERARY

Day 1: Hike From Marangu Gate Through The Forested, Lower Slopes, Mandara Escarpment, And To Mandara Hut (2,700m).

On day one of the 5 days Kilimanjaro hiking tour, start your incredible trek to the top of Africa. You will be met by your guide and a mountain support crew at your accommodation in Arusha in the morning.

You have a quick briefing, after which you will be driven for about 1½ hours to Kilimanjaro National Park’s eastern gate: Marangu Gate (1,860 m). Here, you’ll acquire your trekking permit and register with the search and rescue service. After all the formality, begin your trek through the beautiful, cool, humid Afromontane rainforest on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes.

You will possibly spot some exotic plants, birds, and animals. Various species of orchids, ferns, figs, olive trees, and palms dripping with hanging mosses are found here. Animals include aardvarks, mongooses, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Your guide will reveal insight into the exotic flora and fauna you pass and set a reasonable pace, to allow for time to acclimatize to the altitude changes.

This forest zone is covered with mist and there is also the possibility of rain in the afternoon while traveling under the lush, green canopy. So, shorts and t-shirts should be sufficient but be prepared with your rain gear and warmer clothing. Gaiters and trekking poles will also help as these lower elevations can be wet and muddy.

After reaching the Mandara Hut (2,700 m), our mountain support crew will take care of the necessities and prepare lunch for you. The hut features running water, sleeping bunks, and flushable toilets.

Day 2: Hike Through The Heather And Moorland Zone To Horombo Hut (3,720m).

On day two of your 5 days Kilimanjaro hiking safari in Tanzania tour, you’ll enjoy an early breakfast before trekking into the upper rainforest zone.

At (3000 meters/9842 feet), you’ll reach the heather and moorland zone/semi-alpine zone. Here, you’ll encounter Mt Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular and strange plants with giant lobelia and giant groundsel growing to heights of 5 meters (16 feet)!

Continue up into open moorlands where small shrubs are the main vegetation. During the day’s walk, you’ll traverse several ravines before reaching the hut, which is set in a rocky valley. After arriving at the Horombo hut (3720 meters/12205 feet) on this day, you will enjoy views of two magnificent volcanoes at once: Mount Kibo and Mount Mawenzi. Then have lunch and some time to relax.

Note that at this zone, you may start to feel the effects of altitude, and to aid your acclimatization to the reduced oxygen levels, embark on an acclimatization hike in the direction of Kibo Hut with a (200 meters/655 feet) gain in altitude. This will help your body adapt. Then return to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.

On day three of your 5 days Kilimanjaro hiking tour, wake to breakfast as usual. Then, trek through the heathland and enter the alpine desert zone. Due to the increase in altitude and thinning oxygen levels, you’ll hike at a slow pace today to allow time to get acclimatized. Be careful to notice any signs of altitude sickness.

Remember to take it slowly and drink enough water –  about 4 liters a day (little by little, frequently).  As you continue through the dwindling heathland, you will enter the sweeping saddle between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi and get a great view of Kibo after crossing the saddle.

After reaching the Kibo Hut (4,700m) you’ll be served lunch. We recommend you sleep as much as you can, avoid any strenuous activity, and drink lots of water as you prepare for the upcoming hike to the summit.

You’ll need your ski stick and extra thermal clothing for your summit bid – also ensure that your headlamp and camera batteries are in order and make sure you have spare sets of batteries available as well. Carry your water in a thermal flask otherwise, it will freeze later.

Get ready for the last leg of the trek to the summit. Your trek begins beneath the stars as you make your way up a large scree slope, guided only by torch light, to reach Gilman’s Point (18652 feet/5685 meters). If you are lucky, you will reach in time for breathtaking views of the sun rising behind Mawenzi Peak.

This is the section of the route that most trekkers find the toughest, and you should be prepared for a chilly morning. The stunning spectacle of the sun rising over the ice fields of the crater will make the early start worthwhile.

If you still have the energy, it’s a further hike of about two hours along the rim of the crater to summit Uhuru Peak (19341 feet/5895 meters), the roof of Africa. From here, enjoy marvelous views of the crater, ice fields, and plains below.

After photos and time to catch your breath, return to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest. Without a doubt, you’ll have a good sleep, feeling exhilarated and proud of your achievement.
